在英語中很多看似簡單的短語的意思卻不見得簡單，甚至有被錯解的可能；除了語法上的構造引起意思的差異這個原因之外，還有一個很重要的原因是很多短語的意思不止一個，如 give way。
短語 give way 的意思之所以那麼多是因為 give 和 way 的意思都多，尤其是 way，那麼它們的組合就相當于兩個集合的笛卡爾乘積，自然而然就有更多的意思，然而有些意思在實際中卻很少被使用。
Give 是常見的可以接雙賓語的及物動詞之一，常用格式是：give sth to sb 或 give sb sth，例如：
請你幫個忙，把信交給奧利弗好嗎？
Would you please do me a favor and give the letter to Oliver？
Would you please do me a favor and give Oliver the letter？
短語 give way 也可以套用格式的其中之一：give way to sth/sb，它的字面意思是「給出路」，那麼它的基本意思是「讓路」，也就是讓其他的先行，這里 way 指的是物理上的「路」，例如：
作為文明城市的標志，汽車必須讓路給行人。
正確：As a sign of a civilized city， cars must give way to pedestrians.
錯誤：As a sign of a civilized city， cars must give pedestrians way.
此時擋住別人的路應該用 in the/sb‘s/... way，表示的是在路里面，而不是 on the way；on the way 表示在去或往什麼的路上，或在什麼途中等，例如：
The ambulance can‘t get out of the driveway with an accident in its way.
救護車出不了車道，路上發生了事故。
They had a two-day stopover there on the way to London.
他們在去倫敦的路上在那里停留了兩天。
然而我們知道 way 是一個用法非常廣泛的單詞，它除了可以指物理上的「路」之外，還可以指抽象的「路」等意思，因此 give way 還可以表示抽象的「讓路」，也就是讓步或退讓等，例如：
She is very optimistic about life so she will never give way to difficulties and frustration.
她對生活非常樂觀，所以她永遠不會向困難和挫折屈服。
The last thing I will do is give way to despair.
我最不愿意做的事就是向絕望低頭。
在實際應用中，give way 的實際意思不止這兩個，它甚至還有「垮掉；倒塌「的意思，但是卻鮮為人知，因為 give 是常見的能接雙賓語的及物動詞，它的主語一般都是人，例如：
她把票遞給了登機手續服務處的女服務員。
She gave her ticket to the woman at the check-in desk.
She gave the woman her ticket at the check-in desk.
然而當 give way 意為「垮掉」等意思時的主語卻是物，相當于 break 或 fall down，例如：
We shouldn‘t lean against the pillar too long—it’s liable to get way at any moment.
我們不應該靠在柱子上太久，它隨時都可能倒塌。
We felt the ground give way under our feet.
我們感覺到腳下的土地下陷了。
Give way 至是 way 對應的一個短語，實際的短語遠不止這個，常見的還有 in a big way，the other way around，under way 或 in some ways 等等，在實際學習當中要引起重視。
